Monogenic Hypertension

  • Monogenic hypertension must be suspected in children or adolescents who present with hypertension.
  • All monogenic forms of hypertension lead to volume expansion and thereby exhibit suppressed plasma renin activity.
  • Arterial hypertension with electrolyte disturbances and/or acid base disturbances is highly suggestive of monogenic hypertension.
  • Transtubular potassium gradient (TTKG) is very useful in evaluating monogenic forms of hypertension.
  • Urinary steroid hormone analysis and genetic testing are additional tools in early diagnosis of monogenic forms of hypertension.
