What are you looking forward to most in this year’s conference?

This year is the Golden Jubilee Annual Congress of the Indian Society of Nephrology. So, this is a special occasion for all of us. The Scientific Committee of ISN has charted out an enlightening scientific program with enough opportunities for interactive discussions. We look forward to an active participation from the delegates during all the sessions that we have organized and expect them to benefit from the great learning experience that we have to offer.

There will be an added feature – Know Your Roots. There will be a wall of fame, and audio visual depicting 50 years’ journey of the Indian Society of Nephrology. A museum depicting how Nephrology evolved in the last 50 years will be on display. Rare original documents will be shown. Look out for the first thesis done in the field of Nephrology.

Which oral antidiabetic agents can be used in patients with kidney disease?

Oral antidiabetic drugs should be used with extreme caution in CKD. Insulin is a safer alternative. As far as oral agents are concerned, DPP-4 inhibitors may be considered.

Do we need more clinical trials and cohort studies in Nephrology?

Patients with kidney disease need better management, which can only be achieved through more and better clinical studies. Observational studies can get the effect of the intervention wrong, as they are usually in favor of the intervention.

Clinical trials are essential to the development of new medical treatments and diagnostic tests, and allow testing and monitoring of the effect of a treatment on a large number of people to ensure that any improvement seen with the treatment is not just a random effect.

Additionally, clinical trials improve health care services by raising standards of treatment. Doctors and hospital staff involved in clinical trials are constantly trained to provide best practice patient care.

Therefore, there is always a need for more clinical trials.
