  • Current treatment of kidney disease is not completely satisfactory particularly when initiated in the late stages of renal progression.
  • Diet modification which may retard CKD progression and give mortality benefit.
  • Four areas receiving attention: Sodium retention, protein restriction and ketoanalogue supplementation, potassium restriction and phosphate restriction.
  • Average Indian protein intake does not exceed 0.6 g/day and PEW is highly prevalent.
  • Reorient about protein intake: Hypoalbuminemia is a proved marker for worse outcome both in predialysis and dialysis population.
  • Diabetics are more prone to protein energy wasting and poor outcome.
  • Depending on stage of kidney disease: Nonliguric moderate potassium restriction
  • Low phosphate protein with high biological value.
