Uses of Ultrasound in ICU

  • Point of care ultrasound is a useful modality in the management of critically ill patients.
  • All vascular access should be under ultrasound guidance.
  • Is diagnostic for pneumothorax, pulmonary edema, consolidation, hemothorax and pleural effusion.
  • Combined with focused echocardiography it is useful to assess the etiology of shock.
  • Dynamic scales rather than static scales are more useful for the assessment of fluid status.
