  • Low-level exposure or environmental exposure of nephrotoxins is widespread and could be the cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD).
  • Preexisting CKD patients are a vulnerable group and any exposure to such heavy metals toxicity can lead to sudden worsening of renal functions.
  • Exposure may occur in utero, in neonatal life or childhood and this exposure may be especially detrimental to these individuals in later life leading to CKD.
  • Heavy metals in ayurvedic preparations can cause CKD.
  • Increasing prevalence of CKD in Indian subcontinent attributable to heavy metal toxicity.
  • Chelation therapy preferred medical treatment to reduce the toxic effects of heavy metals.
