Commotion at Kolkata's CMRI hospital as deceased woman's husband slaps doctor

A 33-year-old woman died after childbirth at a private hospital in Kolkata. Her husband allegedly slapped a doctor, blaming the hospital for medical negligence.

The deceased woman’s relatives said that they got a call from the hospital — Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI) at around 3 amon Thursday, saying that her condition was critical after fewhours’ doctors had performed C-section for the delivery. A relative said that by the time they reached the hospital, she was dead. She was fine after giving birth.

Gynecologist Dr Basav Mukherjee tried to explain her relatives about the situation when suddenly the husband of the woman got up from his seat and slapped the doctor. According to the CCTV footage that was shared by the hospital and was also aired by television news channels, a man sitting on a sofa during the talks between the doctor and the relatives of the woman, suddenly got up and slap the doctor in the presence of other hospital staff. This lead to a commotion between the woman’s relatives and the hospital staff, hence the police were called.

The CMRI said in a statement that the doctor tried to explain the ill-fated incident to the family and recommended a post mortem. Regardless of that the family members in anger not only abused but also assaulted the doctor and created chaos in the hospital premises. It also added condolences to the family but physical violence is unacceptable.

The woman’s family accused the hospital of medical negligence and had filed a police complaint. A relative of the woman, said while talking to TV channels that they won’t seek any compensation but will take the legal route and approach the West Bengal Medical Council.

The CMRI is too considering to file a counter-complaint with the police against the family.
