Mumbai doctors have removed two giant kidneys weighing 7kg and 5.8kg respectively from a Goan man who was living with a life-threatening genetic condition. 41-year-old Roman Pereira’s kidneys were approximately 26cm and 21cm in length, whereas a normal kidney weighs 120-150 gram and is 8-10cm long.

Pereira was suffering from kidney failure due to a genetic condition called autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), in which the normal kidney tissues are replaced by cysts. Even though he was living with ADPKD condition for a decade, it had progressively started to disturb his normal routine life. He used to get breathless and had weakness that couldn’t walk properly from the last one and a half years. His haemoglobin levels, very also very low. From last November, his condition became serious as he started to bleed.

Nephrologist Dr Bharat Shah of Parel’s Global Hospital said that ADPKD was arare condition seen in around 5% of patients who develop kidney failure. Renal transplant surgeon Dr Pradeep Rao also said as the kidneys were oversized, they could not perform through laparoscopic approach and had to do an open surgery. Through a single incision, they were able to remove both kidneys weighing 12.8kg in total.

Pereira’s life could have been saved through an exchange transplant. His wife Placima wanted to donate one of her kidney but her blood group was incompatible with him. Doctors later found a match in Amravati couple Nitin and Radha Tapar. Also, Radha could not donate her kidney to Nitin as they had incompatible issues. So Pereira was transplanted with Radha’s kidney and Nitin was transplanted with Placima’s kidney in December. Both the recipients are doing well.
