A case against a gynecologist of the local Civil Hospital, Panchkula under Sections 3, 4 and 5 of the MTP Act, Section 27(b) (ii) and 28 of the Drug and Cosmetics Act and Sections 120-B, 166, 168, 315, 409 and 511 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered for aborting a female foetus for Rs 20,000.

An investigation has been conducted after a video of the doctor Poonam Bhargava and her peon Baljinder surfaced.

Sub-Inspector Brij Pal, the investigation officer, said that a team of police officials invaded Bhargava’s home in the morning for detention but she wasn’t present. They will record the statements of all members of the inquiry committee and also the statement of complainants.

Civil Surgeon Jasjeet Kaur received a video on WhatsApp on 20th February, in which Dr Bhargava apparently seeks Rs 20,000 from Patiala residents Amandeep Singh and Vinay Arora for aborting a female foetus. Later, the Civil Surgeon created a seven-member committee to investigate into the suspected incident.

As per the examination committee, it is evident that Bhargava was performing illegal MTPs in participation with her peon for financial profits. She used to perform illegal MTPs even at her home.

According to the FIR, a team from the Civil Hospital conducted the raid at the gynecologist’s residence and had sealed several allopathic medicine, generally used for MTP cases.

During the investigation, Bhargava confessed that she took Rs 8,000 in advance from the complainant for performing MTP and also handed the currency notes to the reviewing committee.

The copy of initial inquiry report, a sealed box of the medicines recovered from the residence, recovered currency notes, the inquiry committee’s report, a DVD enclosing video and CCTV footage has been sealed off with the FIR.

Haryana Health Minister Anij Vij has already suspended Bhargava. Civil Surgeon Jasjeet Kaur, with the Civil Hospital staff, had presented the inquiry committee report to the Haryana State Commission for Women Today.
