Amidst COVID-19 outbreak, West Bengal hikes salary of junior doctors and interns

On Monday, the West Bengal government announced a hike in the salary and stipend of junior doctors along with house staff and interns of state-run hospitals to lift up their morale while working during the crisis of coronavirus pandemic.

Chandrima Bhattacharya, Minister of State for Health, said that even though the state government is going through a severe financial crisis, they still have decided to hike the salaries stating that it is a token of gratefulness and appreciation of the unselfish work done by them. The hike will be effective from 1st January of this year.

Bhattacharya said that the interns will get a monthly stipend of Rs 28,050, with a hike of Rs 4,425, and a house staff will receive a remuneration of Rs 43,758 a month with Rs 5,367 hike. Also, post-graduate trainees in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd years will receive monthly remunerations of Rs 43,758, Rs 47,124, and Rs 50,490 respectively.

The minister further said that the increase in the stipend of 1st year post-doctoral trainees will be Rs 53,856 a month and of the 2nd year and 3rd year trainees will be Rs 57,222 and Rs 60,588, respectively.
