On Thursday, almost 30 doctors of a private medical college in Uttar Pradesh, who were working at the rank of assistant professor, professor and head of the department, had resigned together after their salaries were apparently reduced by 20 percent by the management.

In a mass resignation letter which was written to the Dean of the Mayo Institute of Medical Science, Barabanki, and duly signed by 30 doctors, had listed three points:

  1. Unreasonable salary deduction for our duty in COVID times
  2. Other reductions under several heads
  3. Frequent misbehavior and intolerable attitude of the management in spite of unconditional support given to the institution

Doctors told FPJ that in May end, the management asked them to take forced leave for 6 days so that their salaries for those days can be cut. In the present month also, they were being pressured to take leave so that the management can save money by reducing the salary ‘officially’.

The doctors also alleged that the management was not ready to talk for resolving this matter therefore they all were left with no option and decided to put their resignation. Currently, all the 30 doctors are at home. The Mayo medical college has an attached 750-bed hospital and almost 200 doctors are working for different departments.

It is expected that more doctors might possibly quit in the coming days. Dr Neeraj Mishra, former head of doctors and resident doctors association, said that this type of treatment for COVID-19 warriors is awful. The management should stop such behaviors to harass the doctors. Dean Dr JP Roy was unavailable for comment.
