On Wednesday, doctors choose to stay away from their clinics in Koderma town of Jharkhand in response to a strike called to protest against police brutality. The assault happened on Monday as a result to counter FIRs lodged by both the victim and a police officer in-charge.

Virendra Kumar, a skin specialist, alleged that few policemen tried to murder him after he was pulled to the Telaiya Chowk police station in Koderma. He said that as local people had gathered outside the police station in huge numbers, he was spared. But he wants justice and has full faith in senior police officers.

The incident happened at Telaiya Chowk where Kumar was shopping. According to Kumar and by standers, a group of policemen asked Kumar to park his car some where else. This resulted in an argument and the policemen, led by officer in-charge (OC) of the local Thana Ram Narayan Thakur, started beating Kumar.

The eye witnesses claimed that Kumar kept screaming and more people assembled in that area. After wards, the policemen took Kumar to the police station. Till then the matter had spread and several doctors and representatives of Indian Medical Association (IMA) had reached the police station and Kumar was allowed to leave.

SP Ehtesham Waquarib removed the OC Thakur along with five other policemen who were with him from their posts and also asked them to report to the police lines. On Tuesday, on Kumar’s complaint, police had lodged an FIR against Thakur and others under Section 307 of IPC. Thakur complained against the doctor that an FIR was lodged against him for blocking policemen on duty under various sections of IPC.

Few eye witnesses had recorded parts of the incident on their mobile phones and the clip have gone viral on social media. SP Waquarib had assured the IMA of strict action after a thorough investigation.
