The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has criticized the Central Council of Indian Medicine, which is the regulatory body for the study and practice of Ayurveda in India. As it has allowed its practitioners to perform general surgery of ophthalmology and dental procedure.

President of IMA, Dr Rajan Sharma, said that they had slammed the “uncivil” ways of the Central Council of Indian Medicine to appropriate itself to vivisect modern medicine and allow its practitioners in undeserving areas of practice.

The government has issued a notification allowing Ayurveda doctors to get trained and legally certified to perform general, ophthalmology, surgical, ENT, ortho and dental procedures.

The IMA has advised the Council to change its own surgical corrections from ancient texts and not assert surgical corrections of modern medicine as its own.
