On Thursday, 25th February, due to lack of proper infrastructure and a crippled healthcare system in Gawan block of Giridih district in Jharkhand has resulted in the death of a tribal woman with her new-born infant.

Surja Marandi, a 20-year-old pregnant woman, was carried on a cot for approximately seven kilometres to the healthcare centre by her relatives because of the absence of a reachable road. The officials who are investigating the matter stated that the two doctors or AYUSH practitioners were not available at the centre for treatment, therefore resulted in her death.

Gawan BDO Madhu Kumari said that a midwife delivered a child on Thursday morning, however could not remove the placenta properly and the bleeding was continuous. She then alerted the woman’s family to immediately take her to the hospital and they carried her on the cot.

Kumari said that when the woman reached the hospital, she couldn’t get timely medical helpas the doctors were not available. She further said that the facility was understaffed and also required an upgrade. One of the doctors was in training and another doctor did not turn up that day even without any notice. Two more doctors had joined last year and left without taking the charge. Taking a better understanding of the incident, Kamal Kishore Soan, Jharkhand’s Health Secretary said that a report on this incident is required from the Deputy Commissioner of the district and helpful and corrective measures will be taken.
