Study states that 86 staff got infected with COVID post-vaccination

A study done by a Nadiad hospital in Kheda district has revealed that 86 of its 461 employees fully vaccinated with Covishield vaccine got infected with COVID-19 infection with an average of 38 days post-vaccination with one death.

Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital in Nadiad town traced 461 of its hospital employees after both the doses of the Covishield vaccine. 86 employees tested positive for COVID-19. Out of the 40 were paramedical staff, 27 were nurses and technicians and the remaining 19 were doctors. Only 9 of the 86 employees had comorbidities.

69 were mild cases and one was critical, six cases were severe. 10 of the infected healthcare workers required hospitalization and two of them were transferred to an ICU for high flow oxygen supply. One of them recovered and another died.

The deceased worker had hypertension with cough, body ache, and malaise after 31 days of the second shot of the vaccine. The patient was on oral medication initially but got hospitalized for IV steroids and oxygen supply as he was breathless. He was on ventilatory support but died on the 7th day of the infection. All the family members of the two healthcare employees were infected with the coronavirus infection. 

The study notes are published as pre-print on 7th July and are yet to be peer-reviewed. The notes stated that none of these family members were vaccinated. Both the healthcare employees were fully vaccinated and had mild disease. In contrast, all the affected family members had severe disease and had one death in each family.

Dr. Ravindra Sabnis, who is the lead author of the pre-print study, has submitted it to the Indian Journal of Medical Sciences. He said that Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital had taken permission from the local authorities for the treatment of Covid-19 of in-house patients. Two months before taking the first dose, 40 of the participants had Covid-19 infection and 10 of them had a breakthrough infection. But no mortality was reported.
