Many People Now Have Immunity against COVID-19, Can’t Lower Guard, Say Experts

Despite the fact that a large proportion of people now have immunity against COVID-19, either due to prior infections or vaccination, there is a need for a guarded approach to avoid a crisis as seen in the second wave, caution experts.

Dr Yudhyavir Singh, who handles the COVID-19 ICU at AIIMS, New Delhi, said that while it was important to ease a few restrictions in order to restart economic activities when cases have declined, people should not lower their guard. A guarded approach in terms of practicing COVID-appropriate behavior and implementing certain restrictions is needed. He said that the national capital may have achieved herd immunity, considering the huge number of cases recorded during the second wave.

Dr Pooja Khosla, Senior Consultant, Department of Medicine at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, said that the second wave has shown that cases can rise suddenly. She added that opening everything is not right. Dr Jugal Kishore, head of the Department of Community Medicine, Safdarjung Hospital, also said that close to 80% of the individuals have immunity… (NDTV – PTI, July 25, 2021)
