Covishield yields 93% protection against COVID-19 besides mortality reduction by 98%, stated the government, citing a study by the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) during the second COVID-19 wave that was largely driven by the Delta variant.

During a press conference, NITI Aayog Member (Health) Dr V K Paul described the results of the study, conducted among 15 lakh doctors and frontline workers.

Dr Paul mentioned that a 93% protection was evident among individuals who had received the Covishield vaccine, and this was seen during the second wave of COVID-19. Additionally, there was a 98% mortality reduction, he added.

Emphasizing the utility of vaccines in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Paul said that vaccination limits infection but cannot provide a total guarantee. He said that no vaccine can guarantee that infection will not occur; however, severe disease can be prevented. He called on people to exercise caution and have faith in the vaccines and be careful in the coming weeks and months.
