When Magnesium Bothers Nephrologists?

  1. Mild hypo- and hypermagnesemia are quite common, especially in hospitalized patients, and may not be associated with clinical symptoms.
  2. Severe hypo- and hypermagnesemia show partially overlapping symptoms, making diagnosis difficult without assessment of serum magnesium concentration.
  3. Abnomal value of serum magnesium is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Treatment should be individualized for clinical situations. Correction of abnormal magnesium value is safe, easy, cheap and beneficial.
