Abdominal pregnancy is rare and is estimated to occur in1 in 10,000 live births. Moreover, in most such cases, either the mother is not able to survive the complications or the fetus dies due to inadequate blood supply and nutrition. So, the pregnancy rarely reaches an advanced stage.

But, in nothing less than a miracle, a woman from east Delhi has delivered a healthy baby girl that had developed in the mother’s abdominal cavity. The delivery took place at Aarogya Hospital. Doctors at the hospital stated that they came to know about the abdominal pregnancy while they were operating on the woman.

Dr Anjali Chaudhary, senior consultant, obstetrics and gynecology, at the hospital, said that the woman had undergone several ultrasound evaluations in the early stages of the pregnancy. However, the doctors in her hometown could not identify that the fetus was growing in the abdomen. By the time the woman came to Aarogya Hospital, she was in an advanced stage of pregnancy and even they could not identify it. However, they had noted that it was a breech birth and they decided to deliver the baby through Cesarean section.

On opening the abdomen, the doctors observed that the woman had an extra-uterine intra-peritoneal abdominal pregnancy. The doctors called an emergency team, extra units of blood and fresh frozen plasma were arranged and they carried out the delivery.
