Quadpill Superior to Monotherapy for Initial BP Lowering: QUARTET Trial

A quadpill that contains quarter doses of four blood pressure (BP)-lowering drugs has been found to be more effective than monotherapy for initial treatment of hypertension, with similar tolerability, in the phase 3 QUARTET randomized, active-control trial.

In the findings presented at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress 2021, and simultaneously published in The Lancet, it was reported that the primary outcome of mean unattended office BP at 12 weeks declined from 142/86 mmHg to 120/71 mmHg in patients who were given the daily quadpill, containing irbesartan, amlodipine, indapamide, and bisoprolol. There was a decline from 140/83 mm Hg to 127/79 mmHg in patients who were given a full daily dose of irbesartan. At 1 year, 81% of patients treated with the quadpill had BP control (< 140/90 mm Hg) compared to 62% of patients given monotherapy… (Medscape)
