Remote Ischemic Preconditioning

  1. It is performed by applying one or more cycles of brief ischemia and reperfusion (IR) to the upper or lower limb by inflating and deflating a BP cuff (above systolic BP) placed on the upper arm or thigh.
  2. rIPC harnesses powerful innate protective mechanism, though the exact mechanism of action is not clear.
  3. It is promising, but has a controversial role in recently published clinical trials. rIPC is especially beneficial in patients at intermediate or high risk in certain situations like elective PCI, transplantation, surgical settings.
  4. The advantages of rIPC: Easy to use, inexpensive and lack of side effects.
