A 45-year-old man was found alive in a morgue freezer, 7 hours after he was declared dead, stated doctors.

Srikesh Kumar was hit by a motorbike in Moradabad on November 18 and was taken to a hospital in a critical condition. Later, he was declared dead and was moved to a freezer the next day. When his family went to identify his body seven hours later, his sister-in-law noticed his body moving.

The hospital medical superintendent, Rajendra Kumar, stated that the emergency medical officer had seen the patient at around 3 a.m. and he had no heartbeat then. He added that the medical officer told him that he had examined the patient several times.

Srikesh was shifted to another medical facility. He was still in a coma and undergoing treatment. A probe has been initiated to determine how he was declared dead when he was still alive.

In 2020, a similar incident happened in Michigan when a 20-year-old woman was declared dead and taken to a funeral home. The staff there found her alive. Southfield Fire Chief Johnny Menifee had suggested that it could have been due to Lazarus syndrome in which there is a delayed return of circulation following CPR.
