Pitfalls in Diagnosis of Tuberculosis

  1. Diagnosis of tuberculosis is very difficult. However, newer modalities and guidelines have made it easy for clinicians.
  2. Clinical symptoms of fever, cough and weight loss need detailed analysis.
  3. Bacteriological diagnosis by microscopy or by culture is gold standard for diagnosis.
  4. Any biopsy specimen giving histopathology diagnosis is also an assuring diagnosis.
  5. Culture by MGIT or by LPA is a very fast method.
  6. Löwenstein-Jensen medium is rarely used.
  7. Newer methods like CB NAAT are now used.
  8. Radiology, including X-ray and CT scan, has its own limitations.
