IAP Life Time Achievement Award for Research in Child Health

Dr Swati Y Bhave was felicitated with the IAP Life Time Achievement Award for Research in Child Health at the 55th National Conference of Indian Excerpts from her lecture:

  1. Since passing MD, I got exposure to different disciplines spanning across various connected domains.
  2. Govt. Medical College, Nagpur (1979-81): In my initial years as Lecturer, I wrote papers on Neonatology and infant vaccinations.
  3. Mumbai (1981-89): During these 8 years, I wrote and presented papers on diverse subjects like clinical pharmacology, cardiorespiratory issues, asthma, infectious diseases, immunization, etc. I presented retrospective and prospective papers of 8 years data on various aspects like neonatal mortality, NICU infections, stillbirth incidence and causes, etc.
  4. As Associate Professor at JJ Hospital and Grant Medical College, Mumbai (1981-89), I worked in General Pediatrics at JJ Hospital, and at JJ Pediatric Clinical Pharmacology Unit. From 1985-89, I worked thrice a week in Neonatology at Cama and Albless Hospital.
  5. In 1989, I became Professor of Pediatrics at BJ Medical College, Pune. Within 3 months, I went to USA and did 1 year fellowship at Harvard University in MGH, Boston in Medical Informatics at Laboratory of Computer Science. I was co-author of a US paper on Expert System DXplain. I returned in 1990 June and in March 1991, I resigned from Govt. service and joined Bombay Hospital and Medical Research Center. I wrote a large number of review articles in journals and chapters in many books.
  6. Mumbai Corporate Hospital (1991-2001): I worked as Associate Professor and PG teacher (MD Ped) at Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences. I could restart my research and continued my papers on asthma.
  7. I have several papers published in various journals like Indian Journal of Pediatrics, Bombay Hospital Journal, Current Medical Trends, Indian Heart Journal, etc.
  8. I worked on a lot of cardiorespiratory papers on school children. These were my first papers on adolescence, which became my specialty from 1999.
  9. I got the IAP James Fleet Award at IAP PEDICON (January 1986) in Delhi. I also won 2 prizes at IAP VII Regional Conference in 1986. I received an award for Best Research Paper at Annual Research Society Conference at GMC and JJ Hospital, Bombay in 1987. I also won awards for 2 years for Best Papers at Bombay Hospital Research Society for papers on various aspects of malaria in children and adolescents.
  10. I have had several conference presentations over the years at conferences like PEDICON, NNF-ISOPARB National Perinatology Conference, Annual Obstetrics and Gynecology Conference, and many more.
  11. I was International Lactation Management Trainer at WHO center WELLSTART at San Diego (1996).
  12. Delhi (2001-2014): I moved to New Delhi and joined Max Hospital and then Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, where I was involved in all academic activities, teaching of DNB students, conferences, CMEs, etc. I did prolifi c writing: edited/wrote 25 books, IAP guidelines, training modules, nearly 50 chapters in various books, and wrote editorials and review articles in various journals.
  13. IAP front (2001-09): I was active in IAP Adolescent health chapter; did a hat trick of best IAP Chapter for 3 years (2003-05); got trained as master trainer and coordinated international training programs in IAP.
  14. I joined Dr Jitender Nagpal’s NGO - Expressions India - in 2003 as advisor and worked with him from 2003-07 on school mental health. I worked actively for Life Skill Education (LSE) programs for peer educators and teachers and was also involved in writing manuals for principals, teachers and peer educators for AEP - program for HRD and UNFPA.
  15. We founded the Association of Adolescent and Child Care in India (AACCI) in 2007. We are a group of doctors - Pediatricians and Physicians of all specialties (including mental health professionals). Our mission is “Promotion of Healthy Lifestyle and Prevention of Lifestyle Associated Diseases.” Our main theme of research over last 9 years has been lifestyle disease prevention and holistic well-being of children, parents and teachers. We have presented papers in both national and international conferences. For lifestyle screening, we have created a one page lifestyle analysis questionnaire to be filled by each participant at the time of registration. I personally supervise the filling of questionnaires.
  16. I am on the State Task Force of Obesity and Diabetes prevention (Maharashtra) and AACCI is involved in training of medical offi cers for early intervention of NCD.
  17. It has been a long and satisfying journey over last 40 years. I am fortunate to have worked in diverse subjects.
