On Wednesday, the Indian Medical Association requested the Centre and states to ensure that COVID duty of resident doctors should not exceed 8 hrs day, followed by a 10 to 14 day quarantine in accommodation prescribed by the hospital and if any doctor on COVID duty got sick, he/she should be immediately hospitalized.

Further, the doctors’ body said that in case of untimely death, the status of COVID martyr and compensation as well as case-wise assistance should be arranged.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) also stressed on taking care of the mental health of doctors. They said around 2,000 doctors died during the second wave of COVID and the mortality rate was 2 to 3 % among healthcare workers, which meant that COVID infected around 1,00,000 doctors. Currently, the Omicron variant though mild but has 5.4 times more transmissibility than the Delta variant. This may result in high exposure of healthcare workers including doctors to the infected patients which could cause 5 to 10 times more infection among them, compared to common people. A large number of medical staff, especially doctors were already infected in many big medical colleges and hospitals of the country.

IMA further said that the health infrastructure could crumble due to the shortage of doctors, hence the IMA suggested the state and the Central governments associated with the medical college give priority to the safety of doctors from infection to the maximum.
