Eating prunes may protect older women against bone loss: Study

A new study published in the journal Advances in Nutrition suggests that prunes may be good for bone health.

The researchers noted that prunes could have a role in preventing or delaying bone loss in postmenopausal women, likely on account of their ability to limit inflammation and oxidative stress, both known to play a role in bone loss.

For the review, the researchers conducted an analysis of data from preclinical studies and clinical trials. They noted evidence across studies that eating prunes helped in reducing inflammation and oxidative stress and promoted bone health. The clinical trials revealed that consuming 100 grams of prunes every day for a year improved bone mineral density of bones in the forearm as well as lower spine and reduced the signs of bone turnover. Consumption of 50 or 100 grams of prunes each day for six months was shown to prevent the loss of total bone mineral density and decreased TRAP-5b, a bone resorption marker, in comparison with women who did not eat prunes… (HT – ANI, February 28, 2022)
