China: Millions locked down as Covid cases show highest daily surge in 2 years
On Sunday, millions of people across China experienced lockdowns as COVID-19 cases doubled to around 3,400. The surge throughout the country was observed as almost 18 provinces were battling against the Omicron and Delta variants.
Zhang Yan, an official with the Jilin (centre of the outbreak in the northeast) provincial health commission, admitted that there was a lack of response from the local authorities and the emergency response was also not robust in some areas. Also, there was a lack of understanding of the characteristics of the Omicron variant.
Jilin residents had undergone 6 rounds of mass testing and 2,200 cases of the Omicron variant have been detected since Saturday.
Different cities in the country were facing sudden lockdowns due to the surge in numbers owing to the Omicron variant. Shenzhen, a subdistrict of Futian, had caseloads soaring up. Currently, Hong Kong has one of the world′s highest death rates due to COVID. In China′s biggest city Shanghai, schools, businesses, restaurants and malls have been temporarily locked down.
