On Friday, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration approved Eli Lillys “Mounjaro” an injected drug tirzepatide to treat adults with type 2 diabetes.

According to the FDA, more than 30 million Americans have type 2 diabetes which was the most prevalent type of chronic and progressive disease resulting in excessive blood sugar levels due to improper production of use of insulin by the body.

Mounjaro” in combination with  exercise and diet, pull down blood sugar levels and was more effective than other diabetic medications tested during clinical trials. The medicine stimulated blood sugar-controlling hormone receptors and had to be injected once weekly, with the dose adjusted as tolerated to meet blood sugar targets.

Lilly announced last month that a late-stage trial of tirzepatide revealed that it helped obese people lose more than 20% of their weight.
