CNS Update: Efficacy of escitalopram for poststroke depression: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Stroke is often followed by Depression leading to a spectrum of sequelae. The effectiveness of escitalopram in benefitting post-stroke depression (PSD) was investigated in a recent study by utilizing several esteemed databases. The 11 recruited Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) with 1374 participants were analyzed for depression rating scores, the incidence of PSD, adverse events and functional outcomes. 

Escitalopram groups showed a significant decrease in depression rating scores and the risk ratio (RR) of the incidence of PSD. It also improved motor function and confirmed its safety in patients with stroke.

Thus escitalopram possesses a potentially effective role compared with control groups and is safe.
