A 15-year girl underwent a robotic surgery at the BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital for the removal of a tennis ball-sized renal cyst. The girl was born with a single fused kidney, which presented a major challenge in the surgery, as the doctors had to ensure a safe removal with minimum damage to the kidney and associated blood vessels and ureter.

The doctors stated that the cyst measuring 10X10 cm in size was abnormally intermingled with the renal vessels and ureter. Dr. Surender Dabas, Senior Director & HOD, Surgical Oncology, and Robotic Surgery, BLK- Max Super Specialty Hospital stated that robotic excision was successful in removing the cystic mass. He also added that the use of robotic technology for dissection of the surrounding structures, blood vessels, and ureter helped in minimalizing the blood loss while preserving the surrounding structures.

Dr. Dabas also stated that the patient made a swift recovery owing to the use of robotic technology as the technology is known to reduce the chances of surgical site infection and ensures quick discharge.
