Initiate drug therapy only after a careful evaluation of risks and benefits. Antiobesity drugs can be useful adjuncts to diet and exercise for obese subjects with a BMI >30 kg/m2. In drug trials, weight loss of 10-15% is considered a very good response. Weight loss exceeding 15% is considered an excellent response. This degree of weight loss should have substantial benefits, including lowering BP and serum lipid concentrations, increasing insulin sensitivity and reducing sugars.
