Prevalence of diabetes has been shown to be high in psoriasis patients.

Studies have demonstrated a higher prevalence of diabetes in patients who have psoriasis, independent of traditional diabetes risk factors such as age, gender, obesity, HT and hyperlipidemia, indicating that the disease itself or possibly its chronic treatments, may predispose to the development of diabetes. Patients with psoriasis and diabetes have both been shown to have an increased risk of developing vascular complications.

Both psoriasis and diabetes have certain common underlying pathogenic mechanisms – they are inflammatory in nature and associated with T-helper cells. In their treatment of patients with both diseases, clinicians may consider a more aggressive screening for diabetic complications.

Further understanding of the underlying pathways that induce pathogenic inflammation could reveal targets for effective intervention and improve disease management in this growing population.
