  1. A healthy Indian diet pattern is recommended due to its protective role in high risk individuals with T2DM (2017 RSSDI clinical practice recommendations for T2DM; 1.4).
  2. High carbohydrate diets with relatively large proportion of unrefined carbohydrate and fiber-rich foods such as pulses, legumes, unprocessed vegetables and fruits are recommended. Millets and brown rice are preferred to polished white rice (2017 RSSDI clinical practice recommendations for T2DM; 1.4).
  3. Diet containing high proportion of the fat and mono- and unsaturated fats like sunflower oil significantly increases the risk of metabolic syndrome; so not recommended in obese patients with type 2 diabetes (2017 RSSDI clinical practice recommendations for T2DM; 2.4).
  4. High soluble fiber diet improves glycemic and lipid profile. Combining foods such as adding fiber-rich foods to a meal or snack, improves glycemic and lipid profile (2017 RSSDI clinical practice recommendations for T2DM; 3.4).
  5. Provide access to a dietician or other healthcare professional trained in nutrition, at or around the time of diagnosis offering an initial consultation and during follow-up sessions as required, preferably individually or in groups (2017 RSSDI clinical practice recommendations for T2DM; 4.4).
