Peculiar Infections in Diabetes

  1. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a secondary immunodeficiency state.
  2. It predisposes an individual to various infections. Infections are more prevalent, severe and are associated with more hospitalizations and complications, more recurrence, as well as mortality. An infection may be the first manifestation of DM.
  3. Many specific infections and some exclusive ones are seen in diabetics.
  4. Defective innate immunity contributes to increased susceptibility to infection.
  5. Some infections (ROCM, EPN, EC, DF) are associated with life-threatening complications, which need a high index of suspicion for early recognition and timely intervention. Implementation of vaccine schedule is the need of the hour.
  6. Early recognition, good glycemic control, antimicrobial therapy, surgical intervention when necessary, vaccination and patient education regarding preventive care are the cornerstone of management to reduce the morbidity and mortality.
  7. Screening for DM is must for nondiabetics presenting with any kind of infection.
