  1. Prevalence of diabetes in India varies widely in different states from 4.3% in Bihar to 13.6% in Chandigarh.
  2. The results show evidence of an epidemiological transition, with a higher prevalence in low SES groups in the urban areas of more economically developed states.
  3. There is a shift of the diabetes epidemic from urban to rural areas and older to younger people. There are a large number of persons with undiagnosed diabetes in India.
  4. Knowledge about diabetes is still low in the population.
  5. Only a third of those with diabetes have A1c <7%. Only 12% of the known diabetic individuals reported during SMBG.
  6. Insulin use is extremely low. Levels of physical activity are abysmally low.
  7. Refined grain consumption is high and fruits and vegetables consumption is very low.
