Lean NAFLD: The Indian Scenario

  • Approximately 5-15% of the non-obese population in India may present with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) —lean NAFLD.
  • Known etiological factors for lean NAFLD are genetic susceptibility and insulin resistance. Meanwhile, additional causes and pathophysiological associations are being investigated.
  • There exists a lack of prospective studies that reveal the natural history of lean NAFLD.
  • Complications of lean NAFLD include liver cirrhosis. Lifestyle modification is beneficial for these patients whereas the role of pharmacological therapy remains unclear.
  • A healthy meal should comprise vegetables, fruits, healthy proteins, whole grains, and should be rich in fiber.
  • Regular exercise is effective in non-obese patients with NAFLD and helps in improving steatosis.
