  • There is regional variation in the reported prevalence of H. pylori infection from India.
  • H. pylori infection is associated with a spectrum of symptoms and diseases in a subset of individuals.
  • All patients with PUD, gastric cancer and MALT lymphoma should be tested for H. pylori and treated accordingly.
  • There is an inverse association reported between the prevalence of H. pylori and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
  • H. pylori eradication does not cause GERD.
  • In patients with GERD, routine testing and treating for H. pylori infection is not recommended.
  • Testing and treatment of H. pylori is indicated in patients planned for long-term NSAIDs.
  • Other indications for testing and treating H. pylori are idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, unexplained iron deficiency, and vitamin B12 deficiency related anemia.
  • Children with epigastric/upper abdominal pain with findings at endoscopy of peptic ulcer disease (gastric or duodenal) only need to be tested for H. pylori and treated. Children with recurrent abdominal pain suggestive of functional pain should not be tested or treated.
