This study was conducted with the aim to develop a simplified risk score to predict the risk of CIN in patients receiving parenteral contrast medium (CM). The objectives were: To determine the incidence of CIN in patients exposed to parenteral CM; and to identify the risk factors associated with the development of CIN. The incidence of CIN in the study was 3.8%. The developed risk score had excellent sensitivity, specificity and accuracy in predicting CIN. Incidence of CIN was found to be higher in patients exposed to intra-arterial CM as compared to intravenous CM exposure. Volume of CM administered, lower eGFR, diabetes mellitus and increasing age were found to be significant risk factors for developing CIN. This is the only study all over the world which gives expected probability of CIN in patients undergoing coronary, noncoronary intervention and intravenous CM exposure. It requires only 4 variables to calculate the risk and is easy to calculate.
