Comorbidities Affecting Outcomes of Diabetic CKD Patients

Most CKD patients have comorbidities. Concordant comorbidities include diabetes, hypertension, peripheral vascular disease, stroke and sepsis. Diabetes accounts for 40-45% of patients on dialysis and transplant program. There is increased CHF, AMI, CVA/TIA, PVD, ASVD and death in patients who have diabetes and CKD. As comorbidities increase, they take the role of driver of adverse outcomes in diabetic CKD patients. Major comorbidities in diabetes and CKD are: Retinopathy, neuropathy, peripheral vascular disease/diabetic foot, CVD, CVA, bladder dysfunction, depression and psychosis, periodontal disease, erectile dysfunction. Due to complexities in treatment, comorbidities have an impact on treatment as they require multiple interventions.
