The Union Cabinet has approved re-issuance of an ordinance on Thursday to allow a committee run the Medical Council of India (MCI). On the eve of the last day of 2018, the Lok Sabha gave approval to the Indian Medical Council (Ordinance) Bill that hands over the powers of the MCI to a Board of Governors.

The Bill that calls for supersession of the MCI and handing over its responsibilities to the seven-member committee of the Board of Governors could not be passed in the Rajya Sabha. The Union Cabinet has once again approved the re-issuance of the ordinance to allow the MCI to be run by a committee, sources told PTI.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill 2017, seeking to overhaul the medical education system in India and replace the MCI is yet to be passed by the Parliament.

To overcome the situation, the government had recently issued an ordinance to supersede the MCI and hand over its powers to a Board of Governors that will continue to perform till the constitution of a council in line with the provisions of the MCI Act in a year.
