Impact of risk factors for gestational diabetes on pregnancy outcomes. A new study published in the Journal of Endocrinological Investigation evaluated the impact of risk factors for gestational diabetes on clinical and biochemical parameters and maternal and fetal outcomes. This study enrolled 183 women with gestational diabetes in the age group of 33.8 5.5 years. The findings revealed that the prevalence of insulin therapy was higher in Asians than in the Caucasians despite lower pre pregnancy body mass index BMI in the Asians. Meanwhile insulin therapy prevalence was higher in pre pregnancy overweight women when compared to normal weight women. However insulin treated patients had higher fasting OGTT glucose than those on diet therapy. On the other hand Asian ethnicity age 8805 35 years and pre pregnancy BMI 8805 25 kg m2 were independent predictors of insulin therapy. Furthermore cesarean section was more frequent in women aged 35 years or more than those below. Whereas the duration of pregnancy and age showed an inverse correlation that is preterm delivery was more common in women 8805 35 years than those 35 years. Moreover fasting OGTT glucose was higher in overweight than in normal weight patients. While 1 hour OGTT glucose was lower in obese versus normal weight and overweight women. In addition prevalence of prior gestational diabetes was higher in overweight obese women. From the findings it was inferred that ethnicity age and BMI have highest impact on pregnancy outcomes.
