Ablative radiotherapy using proton beam technology more than doubled overall survival (OS) in patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) compared with standard photon beam radiotherapy in a small group of patients treated at a single institution, revealed a retrospective study.

In a group of 133 patients, median OS for patients treated with proton beam radiation was 31 months compared with 14 months for those treated with photon beam radiotherapy, reported researchers in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics.
