Alcohol consumption is known to impact both mental and physical function of the body.

A recent prospective study conducted at a tertiary care hospital involved 50 patients diagnosed with acute onset alcoholic liver disease. The patients were enrolled from outdoor department and from ward by means of simple random sampling.

The most common clinical feature noted among the study participants was nausea and vomiting (92% of patients), followed by jaundice (86%). Hepatomegaly was noted in 74% of patients. Signs of liver failure were reported among 60% of patients. Anorexia was evident among 58% of patients. About 34% of patients had splenomegaly, 26% had fever, 24% had abdominal pain and ascites was reported among 16% of patients.

The current study revealed that larger quantities of alcohol consumption for a longer duration can lead to high rate of morbidity and mortality.
