First-ever in modern Indian medicine: CSIR DG hails clinical trial nod to test plant-based drug for COVID-19 treatment

New Delhi: Clinical trials of the plant-derived drug, ACQH, to treat COVID-19 patients that began on Friday in India has been hailed by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) as "historic in modern medicine".

Speaking to ANI, Dr Shekhar Mande, Director General, CSIR said, "CSIR is pleased to inform that ACQH clinical trial has begun yesterday, by Sun Pharmaceutical in collaboration with ICGEB New Delhi and CSIR IIIM Jammu with support by CSIR and DBT. We are going to attempt to combat COVID-19 and we do hope that it is successful." ....read more

British pharma giant AstraZeneca all set to roll out COVID-19 vaccine in September

LONDON: British pharma giant AstraZeneca is "on track" to begin rolling out up to two billion doses of a coronavirus vaccine in September if ongoing trials prove successful, its chief executive said on Friday.The company is partnering with Oxford University, which has pioneered the vaccine, and is already manufacturing doses before seeking final regulatory approval once testing concludes in the coming months.

Sun Pharma initiates phase-2 clinical trials for potential COVID-19 treatment drug

Drug major Sun Pharmaceutical Industries on Friday said it has commenced phase-2 clinical trials on AQCH, a plant-derived drug, for potential treatment of COVID-19. The company received approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) for conducting the trials of the phytopharmaceutical drug in April this year, Sun Pharma said in a statement.“The clinical trials will be conducted across 12 centres in India on 210 patients. The treatment duration for patients will be 10 days. The results of the clinical trials are expected by October 2020,” it added. Human safety study of AQCH has already been completed and the drug has been found safe at the recommended dose for phase-2 study, Sun Pharma said.
