A new flu virus has been identified in Chinese pigs that has become more infectious to humans and needs to be closely evaluated in case it becomes a potential “pandemic virus”, reported a study; however, experts stated that there is no imminent threat.

Chinese researchers assessed influenza viruses found in pigs from 2011 to 2018 and identified a “G4” strain of H1N1 that appears to have all the essential hallmarks of a candidate pandemic virus, suggested the paper published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). Pig farm workers have also been found to have high levels of the virus in their blood, prompting the need to urgently implement close monitoring in human populations, particularly workers in the swine industry… (Reuters, June 30, 2020)
