Fall in testing pushes up daily positivity rate too

NEW DELHI: Even as the daily Covid-19 positivity rate rose to 11.8% on Sunday mainly due to drop in testing, 76% of the new 86,961 confirmed cases were reported from 10 states, health ministry said. Daily tests fell to 7,31,534 samples on Sunday after a record 12,06,806 tests on Saturday. So far, India has tested a total of 6 crore 43 lakh samples for Covid-19. A total of 86,961 new cases were detected on Sunday taking the total number of active cases to over 10 lakh. Majority of the new cases were reported from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, UP, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Kerala, Delhi, West Bengal and MP. Maharashtra alone accounted for over 20,000 new cases, whereas Karnataka which reported the second highest detected 8,191 fresh cases on Sunday — depicting a wide gap. ....read more

Oxford Covid-19 vaccine: Serum Institute begins last phase of clinical trial

The phase-III or the last stage of clinical trial of the Covid-19 vaccine Covishield, being developed by Oxford University, and manufactured by the Serum Institute of India (SII), began today at the state-run Sassoon General Hospital in Pune, Maharashtra on Monday, a senior official said. "We have started the phase-III trials of the vaccine candidate. We will administer dose to 150 to 200 volunteers," said Dr Muralidhar Tambe, Dean, Sassoon General Hospital, reported PTI. "Those who are willing to volunteer for vaccination can contact on the following numbers--8550960196, 8104201267," a statement said.

BDR Pharma’s prostrate cancer drug aims to cut pill burden

BDR Pharmaceutical has launched a higher-strength version of prostate cancer drug Enzalutamide in India, a move that will reduce the pill burden for patients. The company had received approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) to manufacture a 40-mg Enzalutamide in 2017 to treat men with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) under the brand name BDENZA. “The 80 mg version is an attempt to reduce the pill burden (from 4 capsules a day to 2 a day) that has been a demand from doctors and patients to be used for the treatment of mCRPC. Reducing the pill burden is expected to increase the patient compliance,” it said.

ICMR exploring saliva-based covid tests in India

The Indian Council of Medical Research is actively exploring saliva-based test for detection of COVID-19, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said adding that no significant or drastic mutation in strains of SARS-CoV-2 has been found in India till now. During an interaction with his social media followers, Vardhan informed them the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has been conducting large-scale sequencing of nationally representative strains of SARS-CoV-2 virus collected for several months over different time-points. Detailed results on mutations and evolution of the virus will be available in early October, he said.

Maharashtra: 5 days after delivering stillborn baby, doctor dies of Covid-19

Five days after she delivered a stillborn, a doctor from Amravati died of coronavirus disease at a private hospital in Nagpur on Sunday. The 33-year old pathologist, Pratiksha Gavali, had worked as a medical officer at Amravati’s Irwin Hospital, which is a government hospital, till about eight months of pregnancy, before going on leave. Earlier this month, she tested positive for Covid-19 and was initially treated at Amravati, before being shifted to a hospital in Nagpur about 10 days ago. Tragedy struck the family as she delivered a stillborn baby five days before her death, after which her condition kept deteriorating. She succumbed to the infection on Sunday.
