Those under 40 are paying the price for taking Covid-19 lightly

A 40-year-old man from Andheri West has been fighting for his life since he was admitted to the intensive care unit at Lilavati Hospital on September 27 with Covid-19. He told doctors that he’d had a fever on and off since September 16 and had been taking antibiotics without consulting a doctor. It was only 10 days later, when he began experiencing breathing difficulties, that he decided to get tested for Covid-19. By the time he tested positive the disease was already at an advanced stage and he has been in the ICU ever since. “When he was brought to the hospital his blood oxygen level was already down to 93%. A CT scan was conducted, which revealed that his lungs had been badly affected by the virus. We immediately sent him to the ICU and put him on high-flow nasal cannula oxygen therapy and Remdesivir,” said Dr Vasant Nagvekar, a senior infectious disease specialist at Lilavati Hospital. ....read more

CMAAO Coronavirus Facts and Myth Buster: Cytotoxic T Cells

With input from Dr Monica Vasudev1095: Cytotoxic T Cell Therapy Might Be Possible in COVID-19Cytotoxic T cell therapy may be possible in patients with COVID-19, despite there being a potential obstacle. The approach involves treating critically ill COVID-19 patients with T-lymphocytes obtained from donors who recovered from the disease. However, steroids, being increasingly used to treat these patients, are toxic to lymphocytes, likely negating any beneficial effects of the immunotherapy. In a report posted on bioRxiv ahead of peer review, investigators describe a possible method of overcoming this problem. ....read more

The science behind observing Shradhs

Shradhs are observed every year in Dakshinayana during Chaturmas in the Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month. Many rituals are performed to satisfy the unfulfilled desires of three generations of our ancestors. According to the Vedas, every individual has three debts to be paid off - firstly, of the Devtas (Dev Rin), secondly of Guru and teachers (Rishi Rin) and, thirdly, of Ancestors (Pitra Rin). From the scientific point of view, devtas represent people with Daivik qualities; teachers the ones who have taught us; and Pitra, three generations of our ancestors. Rin from scientific point of view would mean unfinished desires or tasks. The rituals scientifically would mean detaching oneself from the guilt of unfinished tasks of our ancestors by detoxifying our mind. ....read more
