International team seeking Covid-19 origin to go to China in January: WHO

Geneva: The World Health Organization said Wednesday that a team of international experts would travel to China next month to help investigate the animal origins of Covid-19. "I can confirm that this will take place in January," WHO spokesman Hedinn Halldorsson told AFP when asked about reports that the expert team would finally go to China next month. A year into the novel coronavirus pandemic, which has killed more than 1.6 million people and infected over 73 million globally, the question of where the virus came from and how it first crossed over to humans remains a mystery. ....read more

People with rare autoimmune diseases at death risk during Covid: Study

London: Researchers have now found that people with rare autoimmune rheumatic diseases are at a greater risk of dying at a younger age amid the Covid-19 pandemic. For the study, published in the journal Rheumatology, the research team looked at the electronic health records of 170,000 people in England with rare autoimmune rheumatic diseases. During March and April 2020 (the first two months of the Covid-19 pandemic), the team found that 1,815 (1.1 per cent) of people with these diseases died.

China welcomes WHO team to investigate coronavirus origin: Report

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday said that China had welcomed an international team of investigators who would travel to China in early January to help investigate the origins of Covid-19. Addressing a press conference, Babatunde Olowokure, the WHOs regional emergencies director in the Western Pacific, said that the organisation was in talks with Beijing over where the investigators would travel to within the country.

Severe allergic reaction in US health worker minutes after Pfizer shot

An Alaskan health worker had a serious allergic reaction after getting Pfizer Inc and BioNTech’s coronavirus vaccine, but is now stable, public health authorities said on Wednesday. The adverse reaction in the person, minutes after taking the Pfizer shot on Tuesday, was similar to two cases reported last week in Britain. Britain’s medical regulator has said that anyone with a history of anaphylaxis, or severe allergic reactions to a medicine or food, should not get the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.

Tokyo says Covid-19 strain on hospitals severe, raises alert to highest

The Japanese capital of Tokyo said on Thursday the strain on its medical system from the Covid-19 pandemic was severe, raising its alert level to the highest of four stages as hospital beds filled up with rising infections. At a coronavirus monitoring committee meeting attended by Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike, a health official said it had become difficult to balance the care of Covid-19 patients with regular ones, assigning a “red” alert for medical preparedness for the first time. The number of positive cases in Tokyo hit a daily record of 678 cases on Wednesday, and the city a month ago raised its coronavirus alert for new infections - a separate category - to the highest level.
