UK daily COVID-19 cases cross 60,000 for first time

The number of new daily confirmed COVID-19 cases in the UK has surged past 60,000 for the first time since the pandemic began.

Government data on Tuesday revealed that the number of people who tested positive stood at 60,916. One in 50 people in private households in England had COVID-19 last week, and one in 30 in London had it, suggest estimates.

England and Scotland have announced new strict lockdown measures, and people have been told to stay at home. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Tuesday that 1.3 million people had been vaccinated in the UK, including 23% of over 80 year olds in England. However, over 1 million people were infected, with the number of hospitalized patients being 40% higher than in the first peak… (BBC, January 6, 2021)
