WHO appeals to governments to promote healthy food in public facilities

The World Health Organization(WHO) has introduced a new Action framework for developing and implementing public food procurement and service policies for a healthy diet that aims to enhance the availability of healthy food by setting nutrition criteria for the food that is served and sold in public settings.

The action framework is also aimed atlimiting preventable diseases and deaths from increased consumption of sodium and salt, sugars, fats, especially trans fats, and inadequate consumption of whole grains, legumes, vegetables and fruits. Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, said that public places that serve the entire community should be the places where healthy diets are promoted. He urged the governments to ensure that the food served or sold in public settings contributes to healthy diets and saves lives… (WHO, January 12, 2021)
