High omega-3 levels may decrease risk of death from COVID-19, says study

Individuals with a higher omega-3 index appear to have lower odds of death due to COVID-19, suggests new research published in the journal Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids.

Investigators at the Fatty Acid Research Institute (FARI) and associates at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and Orange County, CA, have come out with the first direct evidence which shows that greater blood levels of omega-3 may be associated with a reduced risk for death from COVID-19 infection. Investigators recruited one hundred patients in the study who were hospitalized with COVID-19. Admission blood samples for these patients had been stored. Investigators assessed the clinical outcomes for these patients and their blood was analyzed for the Omega-3 Index (O3I, red blood cell membrane EPA DHA levels). Fourteen patients died. It was noted that the relative risk for death was nearly 4-fold higher among those with a lower O3I in comparison with those who had higher levels… (HT – ANI, January 31, 2021)
